A lot of small companies subscribe to PR wire, which then publishes their press releases which in turn are picked up by the wire services. I can't remember if its an annual fee or a six-month fee, but it's fairly hefty and not everybody does it. If you're big enough, you don't have to do it....the wire services (and everybody else) hunts you down for into if you're INTEL or COKE, say.
Some companies, apparently like Ampex, figure if they send out enough releases themselves, sooner or later, somebody big will pick them up. and sometimes they do and sometimes they don't.
