FWIW I looked into the report on NEC spending a bit deeper as it was contrary to what I understood about where they were. Sure enough, just today, NE was issuing denials. To directly quote my contat:

"NEC today made a denial of news said in some news papers
last week.

NEC says that number of DRAM chips will increase 150% by
the middle of Y2000, however, this will be done by shrinking
chip sizes, but not by expansion nor by large investments
to those lines.

NEC plans 115 billion yen of investments in FY1999, but
those are mostly not for DRAM lines."


I guess this means that Zeev can rest easier <G>.
