Broadcasting is a sunset industry...I spent my entire career at ABC

William,

Although I would not refute the bleak overall industry trends that you cite, I believe that your analysis fails to consider the potential future impact of two important technologies on the broadcast industry. One is satellites, which greatly diminish the distribution cost of broadcast and potentially trumps the network-local affiliate relationship model. The other is streaming media, which essentially lowers barriers to entry into the business, thereby allowing a grass roots creative revolution to unfold unchecked by issues of traditional studio economics.

Broadcast is not going away. Smart broadcasters (and I certainly include CBS and NBC among them) will successfully morph and gradually coopt new media technologies to remain highly profitable.

Long CBS and loving it
