I doubt that AMAT ever considered SFAM(They will probably have 65%-70% CMP market share mostly taken from IPEC/SFAM: so why would they even consider buying the firm they are successfully competing against? Spares business? Not likely). I think they are buying Obsidian because they have made inroads into the market rather quickly. This should allow AMAT to lock up the IP on web format. You can assume that if they consummate the acquisition, AMAT will aggressively protect the new found IP to the detriment of SFAM
