For bacteria to infect the body, they must first attach to and pass through one of many "doors" designed to prevent entry. These doors are the body's 3,000 square feet of mucous membranes - tissues that line the nose, mouth, and digestive tract among other places.

To enter such a door, bacteria must first bind to the gatekeepers or epithelial cells. Bacteria manage to bind to these gatekeepers using one of several molecular "keys" - molecules on a bacteria's surface known as adhesins - that fit one of the epithelial cell's many "locks" or receptors. Antex has identified receptors used by more than 60 bacteria and toxins.

The Company developed ART (Adhesin Receptor Technology) to produce vaccines that will plug the locks used by several especially virulent microbes:

Haemophilus influenzae and Moraxella catarrhalis, which cause ear infections,

Helicobacter pylori, which causes peptic ulcers, and

Chlamydia trachomatis, which causes genitourinary disorders and blindness.
