Frederick,

Your "Spidie Senses" about something going off tangent at Novell is the feelings I have had and expressed on this board in late February. The momentum on Digital-Me has all but collapsed as far as the outside world could see. The excitement that we all felt in January-March about Novell is quickly fading away.

The Senior Management at Novell made a very valuable point at the January "Novell Global Parnters Summit" that they themselves clearly are not able to attain. They said that a company must move at "Internet Speed" in order to be successful. Not only must they be moving at this speed but they must have the "GUTS" and nerve to give the perception that their NEWEST ideas are deployed at "Internet Speed".

I know that with NDSv8 rolling out and coming on the market quickly that Novell thinks they are meeting their commitment to this critical success factor, BUT, to get the Internet Community acceptance they must put some of these products and services (or samples thereof) out for public consumption so that the public can get excited about what Novell is creating. One cannot touch NDS directly.

The perfect example is for Novell to put out a "Trial" Digital-Me Service Portal on the Internet. They could have even dubbed it a trial. This would give the community and the industry a taste of what NDS-enabled Internet Tecchnologies can do NOW from Novell.

NDSv8 is great and a revolutionary step in Novell's goal of reaching Directory Services utopia, BUT, "NDS - the product" is not sexy and something that the community can touch, feel, and experience. So it will not stir up any real excitement. A Digital-Me Service Portal from Novell is a clear "touch and feel" example of what a DS like NDS can do for the industry, community, and Individual!!!! ITS UP TO CORP. MARKETING TO MAKE NDS MORE TANGIBLE!

Its just not acceptable that Digital-Me will not see the light of day until the Fall when it is so close to fully functional NOW! Totally bogus marketing mistake! It gives the clear impression that Novell responds slowly to the needs of the Internet.

If they really wanted to release this GREAT product in the Fall/99, they should have stayed completely HUSH HUSH on its existance until September. This would have given a total different impression to the public.

So in conclusion Frederick, my Spidie Senses have felt something going wrong within Novell since February. IMO, they have the wrong guy in lead position of Corp. Marketing. My impression from my several contacts within Novell is that the feeling is mutual within Novell. I honestly dont think Eric sees that there is a problem with this person. I feel that this person CANNOT think at "Internet Speed" and I get the impression that he does not grasp new technology concepts that quickly (i.e. he's not a technical visionary).

Just my opinions. Unfortunately Frederick, I dont think any Novellers read our rantings except for our board friend Scott. But it feels good to vent and later when things go wrong we have it in writing that we can say "We Told You So".

Cheers people and you Americans have a great Memorial Day!
