DR Congo welcomes Rwanda ceasefire

The government in the Democratic Republic of Congo has welcomed the announcement of a unilateral ceasefire by Rwandan troops who have been fighting government forces alongside rebels.

The Foreign Minister, Abdoulaye Yerodia, said the next step should be the evacuation of occupied territories by foreign troops in the east of the country.

Troops from Rwanda, Uganda and Burundi have backed the rebellion, which began last August; Angola, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Chad have supported the government of President Laurent Kabila. Earlier, Chad announced it had completed the withdrawal of its two-thousand troops from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

State radio says three soldiers were killed and twenty-four injured in an accident during the operation.

The troops were on a vehicle which overturned -- reports say it was travelling too fast.
