The beauty of it is that it is a standard platform that 3rd party developers are familiar with and there will be all these people who wrote for Win writing for CE

All MSFT needs is some entry for Windows CE based products. That is why they have struck so many non-exclusive deals. You are right that developers will really drive acceptance of CE as a standard.
Notice how 3COM messed up with palm pilot (i know they still hold greatest market share but it won't last). The should have licensed the OS a long time ago to the big PC makers. The big PC names with CE are going to get the widest acceptance once the hardware shortages problems are cleared up. MSFT will keep trying to make this product as compatible with the desktop version as possible, something that will be very difficult for 3COM.
This is one incredible company!
