NEC to dissolve Packard Bell NEC Japan

NEWSBYTES
NEC Corp has announced plans to dissolve its personal computer venture Packard Bell NEC Japan.

With the company's dissolution, at the end of July, NEC will be moving away from the Internet as a sales channel.

Packard Bell NEC was established in September 1996, several months after NEC Corp took over American PC maker Packard Bell. The company switched to selling exclusively on the Internet in February 1998.

NEC said the company was being dissolved "due to various reasons" including a switch in the product line-up at the parent company.

When PB-NEC Japan was formed, NEC was selling PC-9800 series machines which were not 100 per cent compatible with the IBM PC-AT platform. In 1997, the company announced a new range of AT-compatible machines meaning it was selling similar products to PB-NEC Japan.

Unlike NEC, PB-NEC Japan currently sells machines via the Internet. An NEC spokesman said the company will consider reestablishing personal computer sales online but will, at least initially, have no PC sales via the Web.
