Security Analyzer Aimed At NT

WebTrends Corp. is drawing on its enterprise management and reporting roots to help companies secure
Windows NT-based Web servers.

The company recently rolled out an updated version of WebTrends Security Analyzer, which provides
enhanced features for detecting and fixing vulnerabilities that can be exploited by hackers.

More than 240 vulnerability tests have been added to Security Analyzer 2.1, bringing the total number to
more than 415, said Robert Finlay, a product manager for the security scanner.

The product's Password Strength Testing technology lets IT managers enforce strong password policies,
while the Packet Driver feature increases the speed of security scans, Finlay added.

Peerless Systems Corp., a developer of embedded imaging technology, is using Security Analyzer to find
security holes and quickly apply fixes.

“Aside from [showing] me the vulnerabilities on [the company's] firewall and Web servers, Security Analyzer
tells me how to apply fixes,” said Gary Clarke, Peerless' IT director.

The product's new AutoSync feature, with links to WebTrends' security testing lab, can rapidly push out
information on the latest vulnerabilities and patches to users, said Finlay. Security Analyzer doesn't only
scan for security holes on Windows NT servers, Finlay added. “Any system that resides on a TCP network
can be scanned,” he said.

Peerless' Clarke has even tested the security level of his ISP. “I've been able to go to the external Web site
hosted by our external ISP, and Security Analyzer gave me information” about its environment, he said.

Security Analyzer 2.1 includes an improved reporting engine that documents and presents security analysis
results.

The product is available now. For $1,499, a user can analyze up to 255 IP addresses. An unlimited number
of subnets can be analyzed for $4,999.
