The Chicago PMI was down yet some anecdotal evidence shows brisk business in some sectors.

But the big shocker was the 18% increase in April for industrywide shipments of washing machines, ovens, dishwashers and other so-called white goods that are the essential components of most homes, according to the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM).

Only half the large increase in CPI was attributable to crude prices, the rest was increased costs for apparel, fruits and veggies, recreation and travel and other.

I'm told all the time about how the economy is slowing down!<g> They quote a -2.3% durable goods number for evidence! I find it amazing that anyone actually believes this.<gg>
