Sudan $1 Bln Oil Export Pipeline Starts Operating, Report Says
Khartoum, Sudan, May 31 (Bloomberg) -- A 1,600-kilometer- long oil pipeline that cost $1 billion to construct began pumping oil today, reported Agence France Presse. The pipeline will connect refineries at Al Obeid and Khartoum to the port of Beshair. Initially 150,000 barrels per day of oil will flow through the pipeline, with exports due to start on June 30, though it has a 450,000 barrel-per-day capacity.
On May 28, the Sudanese government told Agence France Presse that it had mobilized a civilian militia as well as its own army to defend the pipeline from attack from the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Army.
