ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Monsanto Co. is about to launch a new wheat herbicide in the United States for the first time in 30 years.

The weed killer, called Maverick, was approved May 19 by the Environmental Protection Agency. It marks the beginning of a renewed effort by the St. Louis-based company to develop wheat protection products through chemistry.

Monsanto plans to begin selling Maverick this fall, primarily in Idaho, Oregon and Washington, although it will be available in several Midwestern states. The EPA approved a similar formulation, which will be sold under the brand name Outrider, for roadside and industrial use.

The weed killer will help growers alter tillage and seeding practices so they can ''reduce soil erosion from wind and water,'' said Carl Casale, managing director of Monsanto's U.S. agricultural sector.

Maverick kills several weeds that plague farmers of winter wheat, including cheatgrass and downy brome.
