TI and DSP's IMO - not much in data transmission, but huge in speech recognition. SR is massively processor intensive. The simple algorithm's I'm familiar with push the current technology pretty close to the edge, power consumption wise. Another outfit to look at is IBM (especially its Comquest division)- with its 'copper' technology. This promises extremely low power consumption per Mip.
