Curious what the role of Texas Instruments may be in the data transmission future with its stronghold in DSPs. As best I have been able to tell, TI supplies Ericy and other GSM (and possibly TDMA) equip makers only. Zero participation in CDMA? Comments anyone - especially the savy technologists here?

Well as far as my I know TXN supplies both Ericy and Nok with their DSP chips for GSM and TDMA phones. I've never have been able to figure out if NOK uses TXN's DSP's for their CDMA phones or if they design their own ASIC. I do know that TXN has stated that eight of the top ten suppliers of cellular base stations have designed their prototype 3G base stations with TXN DSP's. Also I have read in various places that 3G phones will challenge the current generation of DSP's to their limits (and may well be beyond their capabilities) so TXN should have a huge market for high-end DSP's over the next few years.

Personally i view TXN as QCOM's biggest competitor going forward. The ASIC's that QCOM produces will have to be CLEARLY better than the competition in order to overcome the unwillingness of phone manufacturers to work with QCOM (unless, of course, QCOM drops the handset division).
