JF.. the real crock o'bull being put out by the investment community is the information that's missing. In describing what, why and how the stock market operates its commonly described as a place where one "invests" their money in public companies, to co-benefit from their success or failure.

What's missing is that the other half of the market, lets call it the dark side, lives off attacking the market itself through shorting, hedging, puts/calls, a hundred and one other forms of leaching and derivatives.

There's considerable inside deal making between company executives and brokerages and other insiders who get their money out through guarantees, low price purchase deals, golden parachutes to name a few. ALL of this is funded on the back of the small investor. That a good many stocks actually provide some faithful investors a return after all these sheenanigans is a small miracle.
