Once the FTC allows the merger of Excite/@HOME and UMG (and I think, after sufficient hand wringing, the FTC WILL allow it) they will have access to some 34% of all cable ready homes.

There is no proposal in the works to merge Excite@Home with UMG. It is AT&T that's buying UMG. Since AT&T is the controlling owner of ATHM, it's possible that they'll use that service on UMG's systems, but not guaranteed. AT&T hasn't said much about that aspect of things and probably won't until the regulators ask them to make more concessions for the sake of the larger merger.

What's interesting about it all from the GNET point of view is that AT&T might very well be forced to give up UMG's controlling interest in RoadRunner. I suspect that Paul Allen's Charter would come into play along with Comcast and Cox if that were to happen. Any of those companies might find it useful to become controlling partner in RoadRunner rather than going it alone (in Charter's case) or being minority stakeholders in @home.
