Ooooh just waitaseckint. I do believe dioxin is poisonous something special. And I'm glad DDT is illegal in most of the world - wish it were illegal all over.
I'm a big believer in better living thru chemistry, but I'm not gonna pretend that chemistry isn't without its special perils. Look at herbicides. We've gone in 50 years from arsenic to 2,4-D (the infamous Agent Orange, contaminated with meaningful amounts of dioxin) to Round-Up. And there is probably a more specific, safer replacement for Round-Up in some corporate clinical greenhouse right now.
I believe that a balance can be struck between Bettter Living thru Chemistry and Treading Lightly upon Mother Earth. The key is 1) sophistication, and 2) restraint. Round-Up is an example of point 1. So is the highly evolved, highly biodegradable toxin in every fresh can of bug spray.
Point 2 is shown by replacing the propellant in hair spray and Styrofoam with something nicer than pure sweet CFCs. Or lightening up on shrink-wrap packaging. Or the big push among chemical producers to discharge less and less raw crap into the ecosphere for every CD or PC or IV shipped out. We have come a looong way baby!
I do not scoff at those who have "chemical sensitivity disorders". Heck, I have respiratory allergies to beat the band. But I don't think that cleaning my house with lemons and baking soda is a step forward either. I won't use aerosol engine degreaser, but I will use and benefit from biodegradable dish soap and Soft Scrub in the kitchen.
