Chaz - DSP's and TI:

No doubt DSP's are important, but it needs to be kept in mind that for TDMA systems the DSP is often the most sophisticated piece of hardware/software in the phone, but this is not so for CDMA (typically the DSP's in phones are used for voice compression). Qualcomm's MSM chips already incorporate a vocoder and hence a DSP, but in addition they perform CDMA operations like Rake filtering.

I guess it is possible that Qualcomm could license a DSP core from from someone else to perform the DSP functions, but it is extremely unlikely that Qualcomm would ever buy independent DSP's.

FWIW

PS DSP just means a somewhat specialized microprocessor that is really good at certain kinds of operations (Fourier transforms, digital filtering, ...). The CDMA portion of Qualcomm chips do some of these same things, but at this point the processing power required to do this 'digitally' does not exist yet (I believe). Eventually DSP's will become powerful enough and DSP's will take over some of these CDMA operations, and maybe that is the entre for TI (although the move to 3g will delay this move.). That move to DSP's everywhere is an essential part of the move to Gilder's world, but it hasn't happened yet. (Note that this is more Engineer's world than mine, so hopefully he'll speak up.)
