Reports Predict Explosive Wireless IP Data Growth

May 27, 1999 -- Two different but highly aggressive forecasts of growth of the wireless data have emerged this week.

The ARC Group, based in the United Kingdom, predicts that there will be about 750 million wireless data subscribers worldwide by 2004, exceeding the 671 million worldwide users predicted for fixed Internet access. In a separate report, Dataquest predicts that wireless data subscribers in the United States will grow from 3 million this
year to 36 million in 2003.

"The thrust of wireless data growth will be in the horizontal segments of the market," said Naqi Jaffery, industry analyst for Dataquest's Mobile Communications and Terminal Devices North America program. "The main driver for the growth of the market will be messaging via the Internet and mobile-originated responses."

Specifically, Dataquest predicts that two-thirds of all wireless data users will subscribe to two-way paging and SMS services. Similarly, the ARC Group says the growth of wireless data will be fueled by IP-based value-added services (VAS) by mobile system
providers.

"VAS will not take the form of Internet browsing as we know it today," predicted report author Steve Maynard. "It will consist of the provision of a bundle of information services which source their data
