Dave,

I just want to mention a follow up to your excellent explanation of options. I personally am a put writer for various securites and occasionally a call writer. I of course, do not own enough shares of any stock to push it in any direction as do the institutions. However, I watch all stocks that are the underlying security for my sold option positions and by the close of market on the third Friday of each month the security almost always goes to the closest strike price. I try to determine to which strike price it will go so I know if I want to close the option or let it expire worthless and thus keep the premium.

There are many companies that always release earnings after the close of market on the Thursday prior to the Friday expiration. Ones that come to mind are COMS and FORE. I suppose they want to keep volitility in their share prices and that does confuse me. It is likely that COMS has their earnings numbers now but they will release them after the close of trading on the 20th.
