IN the early 1990's, Qualcomm approached a DSP vendor with whom they had been buying DSPs and the vendor a) had no vision and b) told Qualcomm that they would not alter their plans for such a small company. Qualcomm then when home and built their own DSP from the ground up which was 3 times as fast as the one offered and 5 times less power than the one offered. It is used in both the vocoder and the multiple rake receiver. In fact, it was used to gain the ability to decode up to 6 channels in the new MSM 3100 to provide the IS-95B waveform.

Note that the vendor in question has since just about lost all market share in DSPs while we know what happened to QC...

So why license?
