I had a similar problem. I never got the modem to work at all. It would always work over any long distance number, 800 etc, but never through the local dial-up. I got a 3 Com and all went fine. I think it was the Lucent chip and it just would not work for me, but the modem was also some cheap brand. Just trying to help.
