Another quits Divx
Divx, the digital movie disc system developed by Circuit City Stores Inc., is losing yet another retailer.
DOW Stereo/Video Inc., a nine-store chain based in San Diego known in the industry for launching new technology, is being sold to Tweeter Home Entertainment Group Inc. The deal should be completed July 1.
Tweeter has told DOW Stereo/Video that it will not sell Divx after the purchase is completed. In fact, Tweeter wants any Divx inventory to be gone by the acquisition date.
Divx discs are being returned this week to the manufacturer, and DOW Stereo/Video is holding a major promotion to sell remaining Divx players, said Tom Campbell, a corporate director at DOW Stereo/Video. The chain began carrying Divx products in November.
Future Shops Inc., a 23-store chain in four Northwestern states, stopped selling Divx products when it closed all of its U.S. operations in April.
The departures of the two retailers leave Divx with slightly more than 700 stores. Circuit City, with its 585 stores, has by far the largest number of locations. So sad, snif, snif.<g> More Divx road-kill from DVD. Makes one wonder how long Circuit City can absorb whooping losses and stay in business.<g> o~~~ O |
