DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 1, 1999--AirTouch Paging, a unit of AirTouch Communications, Inc. (NYSE: ATI - news), announced today the commercial launch of its Nationwide Assured Messaging service. This is the first service in a family of advanced messaging services that AirTouch Paging will be rolling out over the next several quarters, marketed as Paging PCS - The AirTouch Way.

With Nationwide Assured Messaging, AirTouch Paging customers have the convenience of follow-me paging at a reasonable price. If customers are out of range or have their pagers turned off, the network stores alphanumeric messages for up to four days, and then sends the messages to the pager when the customer returns to the coverage area. Also, automatic error correction assures clear messages. The service will initially be available on two types of pagers: Motorola's PF1500 and Glenayre's AccessMate.

''AirTouch Paging has always been synonymous with high quality and excellent customer service,'' said Gary Cuccio, President of AirTouch Paging. ''We are now able to bring these customer benefits to assured messaging services.''

And thanks to improvements in technology, the price per character of Nationwide Assured Messaging will be lower than for traditional alphanumeric service.

AirTouch Paging's network makes it easy for people to send messages. Messages can be sent from the AirTouch web site at www.AirTouchPaging.com, from e-mail (just address the message to the person's 10-digit pager number @AirTouchPaging.com), by using Alpha Messaging Software, by calling AirTouch's Operator Assisted Paging service, and from regular telephones.

''We believe that assured messaging is going to be a high-growth platform for AirTouch Paging and we are now positioned to deliver and support Paging PCS, advanced messaging services nationwide for our customers,'' said Richard Vile, product manager for the Paging PCS product line.

AirTouch Paging provides service to 3.5 million customers and operates in 44 of the top 50 U.S. markets, including Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, St. Louis, Tampa/St. Petersburg, and Washington D.C. It is the only large U.S. paging company that is profitable and free cash flow positive.
