I think that you're onto something here and have some of my own ideas. At the end of every major conflict in the twentieth century stock markets have gone bananas. End of Cold War and triumph of USA over USSR is another example of this. Stock markets are reacting appropriately in my informal economic model. If I'm correct, and bearing in mind your quote, party has to end soon and very, very abruptly. (As a Canadian, I would like to thank each and every American for this bull-ride that we have also benefitted handsomely from up here in the Great White North (literally speaking today!).)

The real tragedy will be the decimation of so much retirement capital (in the form of mutual funds, etc.). I would hate to be nearing retirement right now and not have the time required to recover from any major pull-backs. I can see people jumping out of Wall Street (and Bay Street -- Canada's WS equivalent) windows in droves when the money that was going to be used to support their life-style in "golden years" is gone because of choices they made politically. Nobody ever looks at it this way though -- everyone's always looking for someone else to blame for their plight. I can see Greenspan et al being demonized in much the same way as Hoover was sometime in the near future.

Also, I can't see any contenders on the horizon of sufficient merit to take on USA in any type of meaningful conflict which means that, using my model, nothing will be able to "kick-start" the whole circular process. A bull market like we're seeing now is very much a Phoenix born in the ashes of stability following triumph in Cold War conflict but once dead will stay dead for a long time this time around.

P.S. Maybe if we're all lucky the aliens in "Independence Day" will show up following pandemonium from market crash and take everyone on. It's the only scenario that might save us all from our own greed and resurrect the market.

P.P.S. Can Bill Clinton fly a fighter jet?
