There are many different technologies used for spill clean up depending on how much, where, weather, etc. For spills in US, a protocol overseen by the EPA/Coast Guard Regional Response Teams is used with a local agent determining the way the spill will be taken care of. All products and processes must be listed on the National Contingency Plan, the products and processes on this list are not tested for efficacy, only that they will do no further harm. This labyrinth of acronyms and red tape has been my life for the past two years as I have worked to get approvals for biocatalysts that can remediate oil in situ. PM me if you want any links, etc. Sharon
