There are several commercials whom people who are not technically savvy or even marginally informed about the internet have singled out as not only catchy but downright insightful.
SUNW's "DOT COM" campaign -- pretty much tells everyone what this company is all about. Even if they really DON'T have the e-commerce tools that can make your DOT COM worth more than the registration fee they do have the hardware/software that helps run it. If you ask the average person, they will tell you that SUNW is into e-commerce and all things WWW.
CISCO's "we're what the internet is built of" (or something to that effect) pretty much explains what this company does and how.
IBM's "I AM" campaign for their Lotus Notes product is the most awe inspiring campaign to date PERIOD. I don't care what the product is about it makes me feel GOOD.
Again, IBM's "e" commercials touting the company's e-commerce software, hardware and services is beyond reproach. Any average person will swear that IBM is the leader in e-commerce business. If not, they know more about it than just software and hardware.
Oracle's new "e-commerce engine" ads are rather simple yet elegant in their presentation. They take industry leaders in e-commerce/internet and show they depend on them to do whatever it is they need to do.
At least MSFT still tries to get us someplace....I think they really want us to get someplace but they sure don't know how to do it :) But that's not really what I need to say here. They at least get the message out and LOUDLY.
Shoot, even YAHOO has a real catchy ad campaign.....
I'd love to see NOVL get some guts and head to Hollywood or New York City and sit down with some WILD thinking individuals to come up with something like "Rock the Net" or "Putting a human face on the Net". I'd love to see them expand on that last thought -- for too many people, there is no "face" on the internet. Just alot of graphics, text and sound -- lots of sights and sounds but no SOUL.
I wish there was a way to connect NOVL's NDS with SOUL...hmmmmm NDS, the SOUL of the internet.
If ever could be something like it, NDS is the closest thing to it.
OK, I totally empathize with this thread....then I think to myself, complaining is not a solution BUT it is the BEGINNING.
So, let's see...what IS NDS?
It's a directory -- ugh, that's real sexy. It's a data store -- hmmm..not like I could buy candy there right? It's what organizes resources and allows access to them on a network - yeah, that sounds real catchy.
Maybe it's easier to just complain :)

ps - just talking with my "Better Half" about this topic (she's a non-technical person of course), she feels that NDS should be marketed more in the sense of what it can do for you. It can organize things (resources), connect you to them, allow you to manage your digital life. Sort of like your personal secretary only he/she never needs a break :)
Just a thought but how does this sound?
