Albert,>>Merced-1000Mhz at the latest 18 months from now. While intel is planning to release the same chip few years after Rod's release.
First of all, Intel doesn't release any hard dates for future generation chips. However, I have HP ads that show Merced based servers ready in 1998. That may be early '99 now, but not 2000, IMO.
BTW, will the AMD "equivalent" of Merced run 64 bit UNIX out of the chute and then Microsoft OS's later?
Does AMD have a Merced equiv. in development? What's their schedule?
I saw Michael Dell on CNN Moneyline after Dell's blowout quarter and he said Dell will not even look at non-Intel MPU's. He said they've wasted too much money that way.
Speaking of "out of the chute" AMD said no tier ones are planning K6 based PC's for "out of the chute" time, but they are confident it will happen later. Is this wait and see, let the others find the bugs and see if AMD can really ramp production with competitive yields? By the time that confidence is reached, if it does, it will be late in the year and late in the game, IMO. AMD, to me, almost must have credible companies lining up now, or it could be game over before it starts.
