Paul - RE: "So, are you telling me that at the AMD K7 launch we can expect ONE VENDOR - Compaq - to announce that they will have a K7 machine sometime "LATER IN THE QUARTER" ?"
All I know is what is stated in that article, which strongly implies Compaq will announce a K7-based system on the K7's launch day.
"This is what happened with the Kmart 63 and the mobile Kmart 63 P's and, as the article said, "the world should not expect anything different this time."
There is only one mobile K6-III P.
You do have a point there, but in AMD's eyes, last time Compaq said they would use the chip, and we can guess they will do the same this time. They never said anything about availability, so we will have to wait until launch date for info about that. You know AMD has a history of announcing but not supplying, so who is to say things will be different this time, as the quote suggests.
"Are you expecting anything differently ?"
Yes, but differently from the K6 launch. Remember that post I made after reading lots of old messages? The K6 didn't have ANY Tier 1 support when it came out. This time, the K7 will. So far, things are looking good for the K7, assuming performance is significantly better than FS's benchmarks. The way I see it, what could really screw AMD up is the transition to .18 at Austin and the ramp-up at Dresden. Fortunately, AMD does not have to worry about the DELAYED RDRAM to screw them over. |
