Chuzzlewit, Your thinking is no different from what i've witnessed amongst drug users. Many who use drugs try to influence others by making the claims that drugs expand your horizons, that it gives you new meaning, that colors suddenly become alive, that sounds are clearer..etc. What we know is that the drugs are eating away the brain cells and though the person may feel they are gaining new heights are they really descending to the abyss. Keep it up and they become so out of touch with reality they they are worthless. A person who has been free from drugs may be tempted to go back but the fear of what they were becoming acts as a good motivator to keep them in the right direction. Likewise, a Christian who has been cleansed from a guilty conscience is often times lured back to vain imaginations, lust, covetousness, etc but the reality of "returning to the beggarly elements" acts a good restraint.
