Company Opens Third Data Center as Customer Demand Increases

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 2, 1999-- New Center Will Fuel Even Further Growth for Company's Internet Business

Fueled by increased customer demand, WINSTAR COMMUNICATIONS, INC. (NASDAQ: WCII - news) today announced it is expanding its Web hosting business with the opening of its newest data center in Tysons Corner, VA.

The new 14,000 square foot facility will provide dedicated and shared Web hosting to business customers, as well as collocation and outsourcing services.

The new data center will also be the home for Office.com(SM), WinStar's new business destination site for small- and mid-sized businesses. Office.com is currently available on Yahoo! Small Business, and will be fully launched to customers in late summer 1999. The center will also house WinStar's own Web site, www.winstar.com.

Speed and Security

The WinStar data center will be connected to the public voice and data networks through WinStar's local Wireless Fiber(SM) service, as well as the company's long-haul data backbone, which connects the top 60 U.S. markets. WinStar's Wireless Fiber service provides 99.999% reliability, higher than traditional fiber. The center will also utilize fiber to provide redundant connections from the data center to WinStar's networks and the Internet. The WinStar data center will also feature 24 x 7 support with on-site operations personnel.

Demand Drives Expansion, Revenues

WinStar currently operates two other data centers in Boston and Seattle, but growth in its hosting business required the company to expand these operations. As customer demand increases, WinStar plans to expand further by opening additional data centers in the U.S. and internationally. Today, the company hosts more than 6,000 Web sites at these centers, including Microsoft, the Federal Home Loan Bank (www.fhlbsea.com) and The Spokesman Review (www.spokane.net).

''Because the data center will have direct access to the primary East Coast network access point, our customers will benefit from faster speeds and greater reliability,'' said Nathan Kantor, president and chief operating officer of WinStar. ''Web hosting centers are an important part of building lasting relationships with Internet customers. Not only does this new data center serve the requirements for our company's continued growth, but it also emphasizes WinStar's dedication to providing high quality service and customer satisfaction, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.''

WinStar's Internet services include high-speed Internet local access using the company's broadband network in more than 30 of the top U.S. markets; Web consulting and outsourcing, including Web site hosting, design, intranet/extranet site management and e-commerce solutions; and LAN/WAN and legacy systems integration. These services are available for larger, broadband-intensive users, as well as small- and mid-sized businesses.

WinStar Communications, Inc. is a pioneer in providing business customers with broadband communications services, including local and long distance phone service, as well as high-speed Internet access, data and information services. WinStar provides these Wireless Fiber(SM) services in more than 30 U.S. markets over its own local broadband networks, using its licenses in the 28 and 38 GHz spectrum, which are connected to the company's nationwide fiber-optic network. In addition, the company offers Wireless Fiber services in one
market outside of the U.S. In the past year, WinStar has become one of the largest Internet companies in the U.S. Recently, the company announced a destination Web site for businesses, Office.com(SM), a service from WinStar.

Except for any historical information contained herein, the matters discussed in this press release contain forward-looking statements that involve risks and uncertainties, which are described in WinStar's SEC reports, including the 10-K for the period ended December 31, 1998, and the 10-Q for the period ended March 31, 1999.

WinStar is a registered trademark, and Wireless Fiber and Office.com are service marks of WinStar Communications, Inc.
