Albert, I didn't say a 1000 MHz Merced by the end of '98. 1 GHz probably doesn't hit until 2000 or something. They probably start in '98 or '99 at 600 MHz (been bandied about).

Oh well, this is getting to be a pi**ing contest again.

Interesting though, that I just came from a meeting where it was discussed whether computer vendors would change from a CPU chip market leader to someone with nowhere near the same track record based on cost. This was not an Intel-AMD based discussion, but was about bigger machines. Anyway, the argument was like: the CPU chip may be, what, a generous 20% of the overall PC cost? A 25% discount on the CPU chip would yield 0.20X 25%, or 5% reduction of overall CPU cost. Why bother with setting up all the testing, etc. infrastructure for 5 percent? Especially when it's a whole new game with Merced coming up in two years or so.

BTW, at the meeting, the conclusion was that you don't switch for 5%.
