Hitler would not have opened a second front if it had not been for his cockamamie theories. He thought that the United States was a decadent mongrel nation, and the the Slavs were markedly inferior to the Teutonic races, and that the "egalitarianism" of both sapped them of their martial spirit. Therefore, he ignored ordinary military calculations...I did not mention the effect of Christianity, of course, and Gibbon has been somewhat superceded by this time,but I think that the factors that I mentioned are generally agreed upon, and compatible with part of his narrative. Our situation is different, since we are not relying upon "horse and buggy" technology, by the way, so we can maintain pretty far- flung interests comfortably...
