In all seriousness - I believe the baby seat killed the station wagon. I grew up in station wagons twenty and thirty years ago. They were the universal family vehicle. That is when it was ok to stack four or even five skinnybutted schoolkids abreast on the middle bench. Now we have mandatory baby seats. They really chew up the usable space. Getting the seat into and out of a sedan or station wagon is MUCH tougher than getting it in and out of a minivan or ute. And I have found that installing the youngster in the raised seat presents obvious ergonomic benefits. Note that the minivan came about in lockstep with baby seat regulations in the early Eighties, and the ute followed when dad wanted something he could be seen in. Our old station wagons got ten mpg. Friends' Burb is much more functional and gets twelve. It has fuel injection and catalytic converters, so its emissions (counting CO2!) are less than any pre-embargo station wagon. It has three-point seat belts and antilock brakes. That alone is worth never ever considering some antiquated Vista Cruiser.
