Thank you, E. Your comments are appreciated.

Some religious beliefs, along with a bevy of other commonly held beliefs, are not subject to the rigors of critical thought and empirical evidence. They rely on axiomatic exposition -- proof by blatant assertion, rather than logic and reason. Ultimately, many of these beliefs must rely on a philosophical duality which posits that the essence of matter (soul or any other spiritual concept) is different from its physical manifestation. Ultimately, we end up with a romanticized view of the world which can manifest itself in some odd extremes. Thus, we have Dr. Pangloss in Candide asserting that this is the best of all possible worlds (Candide's satire on the divine right of kings) on the one hand, and CL's assertion that we are all sinners doomed to hell without the intercessrion of a savior.

Oddly enough, this is the same criticism I leveled at Terrence Bergh -- a failure to test his ideas and hypotheses against empirical observations.

Thanks again,

TTFN,
CTC
