Adam, the free PC market interests me. There is also the model of providing the PC as a loss leader for services such as internet grocers. IMO, the PC industry is fragmenting into several markets. The cheapest will be a PC as comms device which the free PC model addresses. I think that market will include wireless portables or small comms specific devices. As you move up the computer market you will come to consumers who actually want/need a computer for creative/intellectual reasons. Too bad that that requires a well educated populous that is quite small right now. I think this segmentation isn't clear yet but will become clearer. Apple products appeal to that creative segment. I think eventually, Apple or Mac partners will need to end up with a product matrix across the full range:

Sub-$200 Home internet terminal
Portable wireless internet terminal
Creative consumer/Gamer computer
Business Internet terminal (May be very similar to Sub-$200 home)
Workstation
Server
