Tombstone Blues is a favorite by Bobby D. Features the most underated blues guitarist's of the last 25 years.
Legend has it that Zimmy was looking for a blues player for his new album, and had open auditions in N.Y.C.in a small club in the East Village. It was during the winter, the day cold and wet, when this skinny kid walks in with his soaking wet guitar, plugs it in an amplifier, and just before he starts to play starts wiping the instrument off.Seems he had no guitar case and didn't want to get electrocuted.Years later,Dylan still talks of how he mesmerized everyone and was hired on the spot.He used to say the best blues he ever heard was played by a "rich, white Jew boy from Chicago".
He was well known in Chicago and if you like good, raw blues, try to find some old Charlie Musslewhite(blues harmonica extradonaire) albums on the Vanguard label, circa 1966.
Another fine album,"Two Jews Blues Band",featuring Bloomfield,Goldberg(piano)and Al Kooper(organ&guitar).
Mike B. died at a very young age in the early 70's from a heroin drug overdose. The song "Tombstone Blues" is slang for being high on heroin.Your pupils are so small, it's said you have "tombstone eyes". SJS |
