Intrigued by your response to my meanderings, I went into your profile and looked back at some of your other posts and found this one.

I agree with you wholeheartedly on this one. I have absolutely no problem with paying teachers at least as much as we pay lawyers or plumbers, so long as they earn it. We determine how much to pay others at least in part by how well they do their jobs, so why not teachers?

It's just a shame that in order to institute such a policy we'd have to do battle with the teacher's unions. It's sad that the organizations that purport to ensure high standards for teachers are the same organizations that would fight any attempt we made to demand those same high standards.

However, it does seem to me that if we were to hinge teacher pay on teacher performance, we would still not have addressed the issue of disparity between schools. We would still have poor kids going to poor schools except that they would then be taught by poor teachers, while the rich kids went to rich schools where they were taught by rich teachers.

Once again-- no simple answers.

Maybe the thing to do is to withhold raises until all of the teachers in a given district or state or whatever had achieved the new standard. Sort of like making all of the kids stay in at recess because of the transgressions of a few. Peer pressure certainly does have some merits.
