Ouzo isn't the wine, it's a liqueur, strong licorice taste, about 80 proof, it is clear but turns milky or cloudy when you add ice. "Greek rocket fuel." A few of those will knock you flat with the room spinning around you.
The wine is probably retsina, tastes like turpentine. As I understand it, the Ottoman Turks, who were Moslem, and are not supposed to drink alcohol, tried to keep the Greeks from drinking wine by requiring that it be stored in barrels lined with pine pitch. The Greeks, a very stubborn people, developed a taste for it, and drink it still. They do also have much better wines. |
