The only iguana I ever had shrank. I went to LA once at Christmastime, when I was about 20, with my friend Lana, and we stayed with her sister Carmen some place close to the La Brea tarpits. Carmen lived in an old apartment building, and the hedge around the yard was enormous jade plants, which is about the only thing I remember about LA. I have only seen tiny ones in pots.

I bought an iguana and we brought it back with us. We drove both ways, me and Lana and her boyfriend Steve, in his Karman Ghia, which was quite cramped, and when I got back to Baton Rouge I let the iguana loose in my apartment, because the lady at the pet store said to let them loose, they liked to run around. It must have been colder in Louisiana than in LA, I didn't see the iguana for a while and finally a few days later found it all shriveled up and dead, next to the baseboard.

A sad but true story. And now I have to remember what the iguana's name was.
