Sam, Stitch, Bosco, Larry, DMA et al,
Phew, I had to backtrack all those posts to make sense of this discussion!
My two cents worth:
DMA's scenario is as plausible as Bosco's reference to internment, which is to say, highly improbable, but not impossible. When irrational men with big egos and jaundiced (no pun intended!) views come into power, anything is possible.
They are many in the Western World who would want to contain China (they confuse some of its ruling elite with the entire Chinese people) to the extent that a paranoid ruling clique in China may emerge. It is of course highly implausible this will come to pass, since I don't believe the 50s cold war containment mentality will prevail.
Just as implausible is the scenario that the majority of people in Taiwan will vote for total independence - the vast majority of the population in Taiwan think of themselves as Chinese. A Mainland blockade of Taiwan would be one outcome of such a vote. A Mainland - Taiwan conflict will be viewed by the vast majority of Chinese as a civil war.
To Larry's point, Tibet is a different scenario altogether.
Hope I have not further confused and/or stoke the issue(s).
