David Koresh and Jim Jones? You have got to be kidding! Anyway, the Spanish Inquisition was sponsored by the Crown, and the Pope made unsuccessful attempts to bring it under Rome's control. Nowhere else was there an Inquisition so ruthless, which is why it is so harped upon, and it had to do with political factors more than religious belief. Spain had recently united under Ferdinand and Isabella, and driven out the last of the Moors, and so there was an uneasiness afoot about the loyalty of the Moors and Jews who had professed to have been converted, and they were the particular targets of the Inquisition. The Jews who had not converted were not subject to the Inquisition--- on the other hand, it was their fate to be "ethnically cleansed", although many of them retained some of their assets and were able to resettle in the Netherlands or England. Again, no other Jewish community of that time was similarly forced to leave. So leave your Christian bashing for another thread, or at least have some idea of the historical circumstances.... |
