Applied Innovation and Lucent Technologies Sign OEM Agreement for Next Generation Mediation Systems for Operations System Communications
DUBLIN, Ohio, June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Applied Innovation Inc. (Nasdaq: AINN - news) and Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU - news) today announced an OEM agreement for Lucent to resell Applied Innovation's AISwitch(TM) and related products for mediation, protocol conversion and data communications. These products enable service providers to evolve their Operations Systems (OS) networks to IP while maintaining support for embedded legacy OS systems.

Under the agreement, Applied's products will become part of Lucent's market-leading Datakit® II VCS/BNS-2000 family of OS networking and access products. The Datakit products are the most widely deployed product in their class, with more than 7,500 systems installed worldwide and an embedded base of more than $1.5 billion. With the AISwitch products, Lucent will be able to provide customers next-generation, IP-enabled solutions for data networking connectivity between Network Elements and OS's by mediating legacy protocols and transporting them over IP-based facilities.

The combined BNS and AI family of products bridge the technology gaps between geographically dispersed elements of a telecom network and OS support systems. The solution will allow service providers to cost effectively manage next-generation networks -- such as IP networks -- as well as legacy systems through a single communications link.

''The combination of Applied Innovation and Lucent should bring rapid deployment of new services for existing local exchange and competitive local exchange carriers,'' according to Gerard B. Moersdorf, President & CEO of Applied Innovation Inc. ''We are delighted by the opportunity to provide these technologies to a wide range of new carriers throughout the world, as well as the existing base of Lucent and Applied Innovation customers.''

''We're very excited about this relationship with Applied Innovation as it allows us to add IP-enabled technology to our portfolio,'' said Mike Dazio, product manager, Data Networking Systems, Lucent. ''We're helping customers' networks evolve from legacy protocols to IP, while maintaining customers' existing infrastructure and protecting their investment.''

''In order to remain competitive and tap new revenue streams, today's service providers are looking to rapidly deploy new service and network elements'', said Rob Rich, Sr. VP of Telecommunications Research at the Yankee Group. ''Solutions like the Datakit/AISwitch combination facilitate the transition to next generation networks from a network management perspective, while protecting their huge investment in their legacy environment.''

Applied Innovation's products connect Operations Support and Network Management systems with remotely located equipment and systems, in Central Offices, CEVs, Huts, Shelters, Tower Sites, and similar locations. Some of the world's largest telephone companies and some of the newest and fastest growing alternative telecom carriers in North America use Applied Innovation data communications products.

Headquartered in Dublin, Ohio, Applied Innovation is the leading provider of mediation products, which enable communications between network elements and operational support systems for the management of telecommunication carriers' networks. Applied Innovation's products provide communications and interoperability for more than 100,000 network elements within many of the worlds largest and fastest growing telecommunications service providers.
