initial content bundle

Some have criticized as lackluster the seven, WaveEnabled
CDs that are bundled with the WinTV Theater board from
Hauppauge.

We should bear in mind that this initial deployment is
something of a beta test. Indeed, I think of it more as a
system-debugging exercise than as market research. I think
the primary interest is in establishing that WaveEnabled
devices can interact with WaveEnabled content under the
aegis of the WaveNet, and that the record-control,
rights-management, and money-handling functions all
operate securely. Monitoring consumer behavior is
secondary. A significant fraction of the "consumers" in this
initial deployment are "early adopters" who bought the tuner
card for the express purpose of opening and using a
WaveAccount.

Thus, we should pay more attention to the identities of the
publishers who contributed to the bundle (e.g., Sony, Sierra,
Learning Co.) and less attention to which of their titles they
have included. The point of this beta deployment is to
exercise the system and establish its probity. Its popularity
will become evident in due course in the broader modes of
deployment.

Best wishes,
