IDX and SIEMENS !!!!?

There is a story on the Bloomberg out of the June 2 issue of PCS WEEK weekly newsletter entitled "Is Biometrics the Next Big Thing?" The gist of the story is that everybody is working on putting finger scanners into cell phones. Most of the action is taking place in Europe.

"The front runner appears to be German conglomerate Siemens AG, which demonstrated a prototype unit at the CeBIT trade show in March." The high-end SL10 model has a fingertip sensor pad directly on the back of the handset. The 160mm sensor uses 65,000 capacitive sensor elements in the surface of the chip. (Probably not our hardware.)

The chip captures a 500dpi print that is analyzed by image precessing software to extract characteristics and endpoints."Finally, these characteristics are compared to a previously recorded user fingerprint, using the same system of 'minutiae' used by criminologists."

Siemans expects the chip and software to add less than $50 to the cost of the phone, which would reduce, if not eliminate fraudulent calls.

Inductive Thinking ---
Siemens is in Europe. Otis Bradley mentioned a new European partner for IDX. I also believe that Siemens and IDX are working together in the O'Hare pilot. The Siemens system is minutiae-based. Who has the standard minutiae-based Bio-ID algorithm for the world? Identicator.

1+1+1= ???

The article also mentions that Sagem is using their own algorithm with an STMicroelectronics Toughchip and summarizes IDX's strategic alliance with Motorola.

We should have confirmation from the Identix PR machine sometime before Christmas.<GGG>
