<<<This announcement is a serious effort to delay the success of ADSL. Maybe someone should ask Ray Smith "why the sudden change of heart"? >>>

Bob --

I could be wrong but didn't Ray Smith say that back in '94-'95 when ADSL was being envisioned for VOD? And now that the emphasis has shifted to data and the business/corporate market and thus the T1 customer, isn't BA between a rock and a hard spot? It was fine to say "interim. . . for the next forty years" when you were developing a new market and quite another when you find yourself cannabilizing one in existence, and a lucrative one at that.

But, yes, I'd love to know Mr. Smith's thoughts now. Think he has an email address? :)

I don't know why we're debating ISDN versus ADSL. Isn't it the 56K guys who should be worried? And what about the HDSL/SDSL guys? What happened to PAIR this week? Down roughly 13%---over 2.5% just today. The telcos will certainly need a highspeed solution to compete with each other and with the ISPs---including the MCIs, Sprints and IBMs of the world.

Check out IBM's homepage and see what they're doing in Chile and Spain, for example. And if you read the MCI press I posted earlier in the week you know they're dead serious about speed AND about ADSL.

Preaching to the choir, I know. :)

Cheers!

Pat
