Sam, Polonius, and Thread,

I hate it when you say cannibalize. It sounds so final.

After reflecting on today's SanDisk press release and Ron's reference yesterday to the 1.0 gigabyte PC card from Simple Tech I offer the following...

NVRAM manufacturers are taking advantage of the IBM's delay to market to publicize the strength of flash technology. Let's face it, flash memory is going to smaller and smaller form factors (type III PCMCIA to type II PCMCIA to CompactFlash to SmartMedia and the MultiMedia Card to embedded chips), reducing entry cost to the consumer and increasing capacity dramatically every six months or so.

NVRAM is also addressing issues of power consumption and the need for ruggedness in portable computing markets. At this rate archeologists who unearth our remains are going to think AA batteries were raining down from the sky and pelted us to death.

IBM seems to be taking us in a different direction altogether.

IBM's microdrive actually will require an expansion of the standard CF dimensions, will likely increase power consumption, will be hard pressed to approach the durability of NVRAM, and will increase the entry price for removable memory for me and you. Will Big Blue be able to promise a product lifespan for the microdrive similar to CF? The ante currently stands at 10 million pictures. It seems unlikely.

Finally, the impressive capacity of the microdrive seems to be overkill for many consumer applications.

It is like chosing between a granite sundial scaled down to fit on your wrist or a Grandfather clock with a Swiss timing mechanism. I'll take the sundial any day.
