Those two songs were both by Richie Havens. The first was "Minstrel from Gault", the second "Handsome Johnny". Kind of funny how 1969 or 1970 (was that around the time that Top 40 pretty much died as the radio format?)seems to be a dividing point for universally shared musical experiences.

The Byrds and the Airplane did fly

The Who exploded into fire and light
Hugh Masakela's music was black as night
