To All,

I just got this response back from Ascend technical sales personnel. I asked whether their 56Kbs modem cards (for the TNT) were equipped with the unupgradeable 68 pin ROK chipsets, or the 84 pin set. The guy gave me alot more information than I expected:

Dear Eric:

The 56K Modem Cards on the MAX/TNT will not be officially ready for shipping until the final revision of the K56 Flex modem technology has been approved for testing.

I understand there have been some unavoidable delays by Motorola and others in this regard. ASCEND has decided to wait until the "kinks are worked out" before releasing the 56K modem cards (DSP cards).

Until (late April/May 1997?) we will have to just wait and see. I do not know if they have decided to upgrade to the 84 pin set at this point. I understand the specsheets for the technology will be available on our website over the next 60 days.

Sorry for all the run-around, but (as you may imagine) the K56FLEX and the whole 56K technology is a bit up in the air right now until a standard emerges. ASCEND of course is actively pushing for a sooner rather than later date on this.

If you would like to e-mail me at the end of this month, I could possibly give you some more updated info on this.
I think I'll do that.

Yipeee! No wonder UUNet, PSINet, BBN aren't going to 56Kbs until the standard is settled. If they do now (or in the next few months even), they'll be tied to obsolete equipment. Field trials my ass.... X2 is going to win this battle.
